My name is Dr. Alex Nelson, MD. and I practice neurology and interventional pain medicine at the pain clinic here at Lakeview Hospital.
Headaches are some of the most severe, debilitating problems that a person can have and sometimes they become a chronic daily, even constant problem. And how do we treat that when that happens?
Well, the key is really in the diagnosis with a accurate history, examination, and diagnostic evaluation most appropriate diagnosis can be found. There are complicating factors that could come in as well. Migraines still are the far in the way the most common type of headache that occurs but even migraines which are classically episodic in nature, can become a chronic daily persistent problem.
For example, a patient has classic migraines for years, gets them when they’re 20’s but then as they age, suddenly they get into this process in which they start, their migraines start to increase in frequency and get worse. Sometimes this is a herald of something worse like a brain tumor or something like that but if we rule that out, really what we want to find is if there is a new generator of pain. Everybody can get headaches every now and then from stress, from straining a muscle in their neck, from caffeine withdrawal, from not getting enough sleep, but when a headache becomes a problem in your life, becomes increasingly more debilitating to your function to your ability to do normal things in your life, that’s probably when you should go see a physician. These are all things that we take very seriously.
We always trust the patient. I can’t tell you how many times patients have come in and said, “I don’t know if my doctors believe me that I’m in pain. “We believe you and we want to help you. And, my goal is to improve your quality of life. That’s really the answer, that can be the combination of medications, interventions, physical therapy, but we’ll always do our best to make your life better.
